Thesis... the start of the end or is it the beginning?

If you knew me a couple years ago, that meant you must have known me prior to my starting my masters program because, as Jess puts it, I was in scholarary confinement. You can count on one hand how many times I got to see friends that year aside from winter break. Luckily not so for the past three semesters except for this one. But with good reason. It's my final semester. The culmination of my program. A time in which I better bust out something good to show for my three years of graduate education. And if that wasn't already enough pressure, add in the eyes and opinions of a vocal community that may have a thing or two to say about my thesis topic.

If you don't know, I'm finding inspiration in hip hop to design furniture and housewares. My way of contributing and expressing my love for hip hop. But the pressure I'd been putting on myself has been paralyzing. It wasn't until recently that I started to come up with designs I like. It's still a very difficult process and I have a ways to go but hopefully all will work itself out come the end of April. But enough peeking into my head. Let's get to the fun part... what my hands are doing.

First comes ideation, then comes sketching, then full scale drawings, then mold making... why? Because I'm bending wood again. And what am I making? A coffee table. Whee! Here we go.

Deriving a mold pattern from my full scale drawing.

Hacking up a 4'x8' sheet of mdf with a jigsaw

to rough out 5 profile pieces (ribs) for my mold.

The result of day 1 (about 2 hours)
crappy jigsaw = quadruple the time it would take with a good blade
+ your body and innards shake rattle and roll fun

The result of day two (another couple hours)
I didn't get use of the better jigsaw that cuts like
butter until the end thus this took way too long.

The result of day 3
(notches cut out with the bandsaw on the master)
It's been a while since I've really used
the shop so I'm quite happy with this.

Stay tuned for more.
